How is Dimensional Weight Used?
Parcel shipment carriers (FedEx, UPS, DHL, USPS) use Dimensional weight under the following conditions
UPS/FedEx/DHL Air Shipments
Shipping charges are based on greater of the Dim weight and Actual weight for all shipments
UPS/FedEx/DHL International Shipments
Shipping charges are based on greater of the Dim weight and Actual weight
UPS/DHL Domestic Ground Shipments
Shipping charges are based on
- Actual weight for shipping cartons less then 5184 cubic inches
- Greater of Dim or actual weight for parcels that are larger then 5,184 cubic inches.
FedEx Domestic Ground Shipments
Shipping charges are based on
- Actual weight for packages with combined length and girth less then 84"
- Minimum of 30 lbs for package weight less than 30 lbs, with combined length and girth greater then 84" and equal to or less than 108"
- Minimum of 50 lbs for package weighing less than 50 lbs, with length and girth greater than 108 inches.
- Minimum of 90 lbs for package weighing less than 90 lbs, with combined length and girth greater then 130"
USPS Shipments
The dimensional weight is applied to Priority Mail and Parcel Post items that are larger than one cubic foot. Postage is based on greater of actual weight or dimensional weight.
